Washington's research and health economy
The Washington-Arlington-Alexandria metro area had 6,465,724 residents as of July 1, 2025, the 7th-largest metro in the country, up 3.0% since the April 2020 estimates base and up 0.8% in the year from July 2024; the city of Washington itself counted 693,645, up 0.6% since 2020. [1, 2] The District of Columbia produced $184.3 billion of GDP in 2024, the 21st-largest county economy in the United States, with real GDP up 1.3% from 2023. [3]
The two federal agencies that matter most to a research supplier sit in this metro. The National Institutes of Health, the nation's medical research agency with 27 Institutes and Centers, is headquartered in Bethesda, Maryland, and invests most of its nearly $48 billion budget in medical research, awarding nearly 82% extramurally through almost 50,000 grants. [9, 10] FDA's headquarters programs are consolidated on the White Oak campus in Silver Spring, Maryland, ten office and four laboratory buildings totaling 3.1 million rentable square feet. [11] Montgomery County counts more than 350 life sciences companies, 18 federal agency headquarters, 36 federal laboratories and $10.03 billion invested in life sciences companies from 2019 to 2023, and bills itself the third-largest biopharma cluster in the United States; the BioHealth Capital Region encompasses more than 1,800 life sciences companies and over 70 federal labs. [12, 13] The Washington DC Economic Partnership reports DC-based companies awarded $206 million in NIH funding and a concentration of biological scientists four times the US average. [14]
Where the research happens
MedStar Health is a $9 billion not-for-profit system with ten hospitals, more than 300 care locations and more than 37,000 associates, and its 912-bed MedStar Washington Hospital Center is the largest and busiest hospital in the greater Washington region. [15, 16] Children's National is ranked among the top ten pediatric hospitals in the nation and receives 60% of its research funding from NIH. [17] Inova, with 26,000 team members, cares for more than one million unique patients a year in Northern Virginia and the metro. [18] Georgetown Lombardi remains the only NCI-designated comprehensive cancer center in the Washington area. [19]
