San Diego's research and health economy

The San Diego-Chula Vista-Carlsbad metro area had 3,282,248 residents as of July 1, 2025, the 18th-largest metro in the country, down 0.5% since the April 2020 estimates base and down 0.2% in the year from July 2024; the city of San Diego itself counted 1,406,106, up 1.6% since 2020. [1, 2] San Diego County produced $331.9 billion of GDP in 2024, the 10th-largest county economy in the United States, with real GDP up 2.1% from 2023. [3]

In 2025 San Diego's life science industry directly employed 61,866 workers, generated $55.2 billion in economic output, supported 155,621 total jobs, attracted $3.9 billion in investment and secured more than $1.1 billion in NIH and NSF funding. [9] The San Diego Regional EDC cites a top-three US life sciences cluster ranking from CBRE's 2025 report, 59,980 life sciences jobs across 2,064 establishments, and average annual wages of $185,977. [10] The Hospital Association of San Diego and Imperial Counties represents 38 hospitals and health systems with over 8,600 licensed beds. [11]

UC San Diego Health is the region's only academic medical center, with more than 1,500 physicians and scientists, and its Moores Cancer Center is the region's only NCI-designated comprehensive cancer center; UC San Diego reported $1.7 billion in research funding for fiscal 2024–25. [12, 13] Scripps Research in La Jolla counts six Nobel Prizes and a graduate program ranked No. 1 in biological sciences. San Diego runs on Pacific time, so our same-day dispatch cutoff is 11:00 AM Pacific (2:00 PM Eastern). Orders placed before it leave our Florida facility that business day by USPS, UPS or FedEx. Standard delivery is 5 to 7 business days, expedited is 2 to 3, and overnight is available. Orders over $500 require a signature at delivery. Temperature-sensitive items travel in insulated packaging with cold packs. [8]
